Minneapolis Hotel Strike Update
Posted: June 22, 2000
Northwestern Travel Management is in communication with Twin
City hotels and would like to bring you up to date.
- Members of Local 17 of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees
union began striking Friday June 16 after contract talks
broke down. Unions represent workers in housekeeping,
kitchen, restaurant and banquet services.
- Pickets currently are in place at the Thunderbird
and Radisson South
in Bloomington and at the Crowne
Plaza Northstar in Minneapolis. Some reports
indicate the Hilton in downtown
Minneapolis has been struck today, June 21,
2000.
- Other hotels which may be affected are the Minneapolis
Regal, Best Western Normandy, Crowne Plaza Northstar,
Marquette, Holiday Inn Airport II and Sheraton
Airport.
- The Hyatt is a nonunion
property and unaffected, and Holiday
Inn Metrodome has settled with their union.
- Hotel management is currently waiting for a response
from the union after presenting five unanswered wage and
benefit proposals. A Strike mediator is pressing the union
for a counter-offer.
- NTM has been assured that the remaining hotels will
beand fully operational if or when a job action
should be initiated against them. (A number of workers
have, in fact, returned to work at the Radisson
South. Some observers hear that more workers
will return to work due to dissatisfaction with union
strike strategy.)
- The larger Minneapolis hotels have recruited staff from
their sister properties around the country and will be
provide full service during the upcoming International
Alcoholics Anonymous convention Sunday, June 25 - Tuesday,
July 4. Peak nights will be Thursday, Friday,
and Saturday.
- NTM will maintain communication with hotel representatives
and relay timely information to our customers. Please
call your NTM agent for hotel booking assistance or your
corporate account manager for additional information.
Also, NTM's Web site at www.
will have current information on the strike.
Please contact
your Northwestern Travel Management representative with
any questions and for the latest updates.
