United/US Airways Alliance

The US government has approved an alliance between United Airlines and US Airways, effective immediately. The alliance includes the ability to sell seats on each other's flights, coordinate schedules and offer reciprocal perks such as frequent flier points.

The Transportation Department gave the go-ahead to the two struggling airlines because the partnership would increase competition and benefit travelers. The United-US Airways alliance is intended to bring in more revenue to the financially strapped companies by combining US Airways' strength in north-south flights on the East Coast with United's strength in cross-country flights.

United and US Airways started implementing frequent flyer reciprocity November 1, when customers will be able to earn miles for either program when flying on either airline. Effective January 1, flight miles or segments on the other carrier will count toward Dividend Miles Preferred or United Premier status, and elite members of each program will receive Preferred or Premier member flight bonuses when flying on the other carrier.

Already in effect, travelers on either airline can gain access to the other airline's club lounges.
