September 11 Travel Anxiety

According to a July 22 survey by Yesawich, Pepperdine and Brown, anxiety about traveling on or around September 11 will keep nearly one in five people home when the U.S. marks the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Leisure and business travelers demonstrated the same level of anxiety: 17% of leisure travelers concerned about terrorist activity said they will stay home on or around the date and 18% of business travelers said they would do the same.

The major U.S. carriers are seeing an expected decline in reservations around September 11, which is prompting them to adjust their schedules:

  • Delta Air Lines will cancel any flights where it sees weak demand between Sept. 9 and 13.
  • American Airlines also plans to adjust flights, however they are stating there will be "plenty of capacity" for customers who do choose to fly that day.
  • United Airlines is making "small reductions" in their scheduled service on domestic routes only.
  • Northwest Airlines has not made a formal statement regarding changes to their schedule.
