Beverages at Airport Security Checkpoints

Air travelers now can carry beverage-filled paper or foam polystyrene cups through the walk-through metal detector at airport security screening checkpoints. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the policy is intended "to make the security process more efficient and convenient for passengers." Plastic, glass, metal or ceramic containers, however, must be sealed to prevent spillage because they must pass through the X-ray machine to be screened for security. That means, for example, that ancan of soda is not permitted through the checkpoint. The TSA said it also reminded screeners that they are prohibited, under a policy adopted in June, from asking passengers to drink or eat from any containers of food or liquid as a security clearance procedure.
