United’s New Boarding Plan

On June 10, United began boarding customers in four groups (1, 2, 3 and 4) instead of calling them by rows. When the carrier tested the system in Indianapolis and Chicago, the boarding process was sped up by as much as 30%.

The boarding passes automatically assign a ‘boarding number’ in large, bold text, and passengers are boarded based on their number. The change applies to all United and United Express domestic markets, but some international locations will continue to use the row system because of airport or "cultural differences."

The airline said it will continue to offer early seating "to customers requiring additional time to get settled."
