Amtrak News and Special Fares

Acela Express New Route

Amtrak’s Acela Express train holds a large share of the New York-Washington business travel market. Now, it is looking to do the same between New York and Boston. Starting April 28, Amtrak will reduce fares between New York and Boston on its Acela Express. Under the simplified structure, which will be in effect indefinitely, passengers traveling in business class between Boston and New York will pay no more than $99 at any time, a reduction of 22% off the current peak fare of $127. Fares for non-peak departures will range from $85 to $92, down from the current fares of $102 to $119. Amtrak will also reduce first-class fares between Boston and New York to $149 or less, down from $170 to $195. New England travelers will be able to "step up," or upgrade, to first class for $50 or less, depending on city-pairs, and Amtrak Guest Rewards members will receive double points for every Acela Express trip between Boston, New York and intermediate points, taken between April 28 and August 31.

New "Federal" Rail Service

Amtrak has initiated a new overnight train service between Washington and Boston, called the Federal. The new overnight train departs Washington at 10 p.m. nightly and arrives in Boston at 8:15 a.m. "Those who recall the days of the Federal, operated by the New Haven and Pennsylvania Railroads, will welcome the return of the train on its former schedule," said Amtrak president David Gunn. "Today's version will offer Washington-Boston overnight travelers a much-improved schedule from the current Twilight Shoreliner, plus service options that should make it a popular train." The train offers three classes of service--First, Business and Coach. Through June 30, Amtrak is offering introductory fares that are 30% off regular fares. Restrictions apply; contact your NTM agent for details.
