On Again, Off Again Fuel Surcharge

Since late December, 2002, the U.S. carriers have been toying with the concept of adding a fuel surcharge to the cost of an airline ticket, stating the surcharge was needed to adjust for the sharp rise in oil prices. American, America West, Continental, Delta Northwest, United and US Airways have all imposed and rescinded a fuel surcharge ranging from $10 to $15 one-way, or $20 to $30 roundtrip.

As is stands today, most of the major carriers are somehow collecting a fuel surcharge. It may be collected as a fuel surcharge or a rate increase, depending on carrier, ticket type (full coach, first, etc.) and in some cases, varies by route.

Additionally, a few other carriers have implemented surcharges:

  • Aloha Airlines has a fuel surcharge of $3 per flight.
  • Frontier has a $10 one-way surcharge for all domestic flights
