Surcharges
In October, Hertz implemented a frequent-flyer surcharge for rentals where
customers want to collect airline frequent flyer miles. Claiming they
needed to recoup program costs, Hertz imposed a charge of 50 cents per
day, up to a maximum of $2 per rental. AAdvantage members are not subject
to the fee, but they receive one mile for every $2 spent, compared with
other plans where the customer gets one mile per dollar.
With the Hertz program, customers can opt for miles at the counter, or
they can decide when they book their reservation. Hertz's fee is added
to the rental bill.
Avis and Budget likely will follow Hertz's lead and start charging consumers
who want to collect frequent-flyer miles. The exact timing and pricing
by Cendant-owned Avis and Budget have not been finalized.
Other car companies are pondering similar moves.
Hertz Expands Locations
Hertz hasd new car-rental facilities in Fall River, North Attleboro,
Revere, Somerville and Springfield, all in Massachusetts, and in Concord,
NH, as part of its strategy to expand into the off-airport market in New
England. Within the past two months, Hertz alsod five other off-airport
locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Dollar Thrifty Acquisitions
On February 4, the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group acquired all Thrifty
Car Rental franchise locations in Hawaii. A day later, the Dollar Thrifty
Automotive Group acquired the master franchise rights to the Dollar Rent
A Car brand in Canada from Dollar Rent A Car (Canada). The acquisition
adds 30 Dollar-branded rental sites in Canada to the 133 Thrifty-branded
locations in the country. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
