Plane Delayed?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a final rule to go into effect June 1, 2003. The rule requires airlines to provide the DOT with more detailed information on the causes for certain airline delays and cancellations. Under the new rule, the airlines are obliged to classify the causes for cancellations and departure and arrival delays of five minutes or more into several specific categories including:

  • air carrier (relating to such issues as loading baggage onto an aircraft, gate congestion or cleaning a cabin);
  • weather;
  • national aviation system (relating to airport construction, computer failure and gate holds);
  • security; and
  • late-arriving aircraft.
