Duty-Free Exemption Doubles

Effective in October 2002, the amount of duty-free merchandise travelers may now bring back to the US after traveler internationally doubled from $400 to $800. The exemption applies to US residents returning from a stay of at least 48 hours outside the country and is for personal items that are in the traveler’s possession upon entering US Customs. Items sent separately cannot be included in the exemption. As before, each adult may claim one liter of alcoholic beverages and 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars on their exemption form. For more details, visit www.customs.gov/travel/travel.
