Baggage Fees

There have recently been changes in baggage policies for some of the major carriers.

Northwest Airlines' has changed it’s checked luggage policy for travel within the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. The fee for checked luggage weighing over 50 pounds up to 70 pounds is $25 and the fee for luggage weighing over 70 pounds up to 100 pounds is $50. Luggage weighing over 100 pounds will not be accepted as checked luggage. The free luggage quantity allowance policy remains the same: two pieces of checked luggage each not exceeding 62 linear inches (length plus width plus height) and one carry-on that fits in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

American has followed Northwest's lead in charging a new $25 fee when a customer checks a 50- to 70-pound bag for a domestic flight. American also followed Northwest by reducing the fee for 70-plus pound baggage from $80 to $50. American’s new fees do not apply to customers traveling on tickets purchased before Dec. 4.

United has increased its domestic excess baggage charges from $75 to $80.
